Moving Tip

Properly Pack a Cardboard Box for Moving & Storage

At Tagaroom, we understand that packing for a move can feel overwhelming. Properly packing your items not only keeps them safe during transit but also makes unpacking in your new space much easier. Here’s a great step-by-step guide to packing and storing items in cardboard boxes like a pro.

1. Choose the Right Box

Not all boxes are created equal. Select sturdy, high quality cardboard boxes that match the size and weight of the items you’re packing. Use small boxes for heavy items like books and large boxes for lightweight, bulky items like linens or clothing.

2. Gather the Essentials

Before you start packing, make sure you have all the necessary supplies:

Having everything on hand ensures you can pack efficiently without interruptions.

3. How to Best Prepare the Box

Reinforce the bottom of the box with strong packing tape. Apply at least three layers of tape, one for each bottom gap, to ensure the box stays secure under the weight of your items. This will help prevent bugs and debris from entering your box through any gaps while in storage.

4. Pack with Purpose

  • Heavier Items First: Start by placing heavier items at the bottom of the box to create a stable base.
  • Wrap Fragile Items: Individually wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or packing paper. Place them in the center of the box surrounded by cushioning materials.
  • Maximize Space: Fill any empty spaces with crumpled packing paper or towels to prevent items from shifting during transit.

5. Don’t Overpack

While it’s tempting to cram as much as possible into each box, overpacking can lead to damaged boxes and broken items. Keep the box’s weight manageable (around 50 pounds or less) to make it easier to lift and carry.

6. Label Everything

Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This simple step saves time and frustration during the unpacking process. Add FRAGILE labels on boxes with delicate items to ensure they’re handled with care. Consider making use of Tagaroom’s Do Not Stack or This Side Up labels as well. These will help keep those extra delicate items, such as a box of glassware, from ending up ruined.

7. Seal Securely

Close the box flaps and seal them tightly with packing tape. Apply additional layers of tape along the seams and edges for extra reinforcement.

8. Store Smartly

If you’re storing items for a period before moving into your new space, stack heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Ensure boxes are stored in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
